"Windermere, Florida" is synonymous with "Luxury", "Elegance", "Style", and "Grace". The Town of Windermere is Orange County´s premiere residential luxury home community. With a total area of only 1.1 square miles and a population of around 2000, the Town of Windermere has a noticable "small town" feel. (As of the census of 2000, there are 1,897 people, 704 households, and 561 families residing in the town.) The Town of Windermere is located at 28°29'48" North, 81°32'2" West.  In layman's terms, that's in southwest Orange County fourteen miles southwest of Orlando, six miles southeast of Winter Garden, two miles south of Ocoee, and approximately six miles north of Walt Disney World. Windermere is surrounded by sand bottom lakes. Lake Butler (the largest) is on the west, Lake Down on the east, and Lake Bessie on the southeast.  By means of a system of canals, Butler, Down and six other lakes are connected to form what is known as the Butler Chain of Lakes.

An Englishman, Dr. Stanley Scott, established Windermere in 1881.  It is speculated that Dr. Scott named this little piece of paradise after the Lake Windermere District in England.  The first attempt at establishing a town layout was in 1887, by the Plant System of Railroads during the construction of the Florida Midland Railway.  Unfortunately, tough times fell upon the fruit industry eight years later.  As a direct result, the idea of a "Town of Windermere" would not become a reality until circa 1910 when J.C. Palmer stumbled upon Windermere.  The natural beauty and allure of the Butler Chain of Lakes and its surrounding areas convinced Mr. Palmer to construct his permanent residence nestled deep amongst the lushly wooded landscape of Windermere.

Although its natural beauty is still as breath taking today as it was back in 1881, the elegance and grace of Windermere has evolved immensely.  Windermere is one of Orange County´s most sought after luxury residential home communities.

Take a look for yourself to see why LUXURY is spelled "W-I-N-D-E-R-M-E-R-E":
